Debate on October 11

Prepare for the debate on the following proposition:

Tourism helps people in tourist communities.

For homework, prepare both the "agree" and "disagree" sides of the proposition. When you come to class, here is what we will do.

In groups of 5 - there will be two teams of two students - one is the "agree" team and one is the "disagree" team. The 5th person will be the judge. We will flip a coin to choose the agree teams and the disagree teams.

Spend 15 minutes in your teams organizing your debate notes. Put your points in order. You should have at least 4 big points to support your side of the proposition.

How the debate will go on:

Round 1
1. #1 Agree team begins - one speaker speaks for 2 minutes
2. #1 Disagree team begins - one speaker speaks for 3 minutes and should reply to the agree team and then make at least one new point.

Round 2
3. #2 Agree team replies and then makes at least one new point. One speaker speaks for 3 minutes.
4.#2 Disagree team replies and then makes at least one new point One speaker speaks for 3 minutes.

Round 3
5. #3 Agree team replies and then makes at least one new point. One speaker speaks for 3 minutes.
6. #3 Disagree team replies and then makes at least one new point One speaker speaks for 3 minutes.

Round 4
7. #4 Agree team sums up, giving the disagree team's weak points and telling their own strong points. This is your final appeal that you should win the debate. One speaker speaks for 3 minutes.
8. #4 Disagree team sums up, giving the agree team's weak points and telling their own strong points. This is your final appeal that you should win the debate. One speaker speaks for 3 minutes.

Last: Judge prepares the final result and announces it explaining why. The judge should list up all of both teams' points and then say why the winning team should be victorious.
**** The judge also is the timer. Each judge should prepare a paper with the words "2 minutes left," "1 minute left" and "30 seconds left." Besides that the judge should make careful notes on who says what.

Between each of the above 8 sections, teams will have 5 minutes to prepare. The judge will also have 5 minutes to prepare their speech.
