HW for 6/28

1. do p. 16 #1
2. Make notes on what you find out about Terra Chips on their HP. Spend at least 30 minutes on the site.
3. Look at the post on this HP about mochi and watch a few of the commercials.

On June 28, we will take up p. 16 #1, do p. 16 #2 (for Mike' ice-cream on p.13), finish up our video lesson on Terra Chips. Then, we will begin a group advertising project that will run until the end of the semester.

Let's make a commercial (June 28~)

For the next several weeks, you will work in groups to make a TV commercial.
The basic plan is for you to write a script, practice the CM, shoot the video, edit the video, upload it to youtube and put it on a HP. We will begin today,
June 28.
Here are the steps you should follow:
1. First, think of the product you want to use. It can be a product already on the market or you can make up a product you would like to advertise.
2. Write the script. The commercial should be 30~60 seconds long.
3. Prepare any props and costumes you need. You should definitely have the product in your CM.
If you want to show any writing, put it on a large piece of paper and show it in your video in the place where you want to have it.
4. Practice the commercial.
5. Bring your cameras to class. A smartphone will work and so will an iPad,  but a camera or a small video camera would be better.
6. Shoot the commercial
7. Edit the commercial - you have to do this by yourselves. You might be able to do it in your cameras. Or you can use Windows Movie Maker (it is installed in Chuo 502 and at keisanki-center) or iMovie. If you know other software, it is OK to use it.
8. Make sure the final video is in in a format that is uploadable to youtube: these should be OK -
     MPEG4
     MOV
     .WMV
     .FLV
9. Upload your video to youtube. If you need help, put the video on a USB stick and give it to me. I can upload your video to youtube. It would be better, though, if you can do it yourself. I think you need to make an account on youtube (or maybe use your gmail account) to do that - can someone find out for sure?
10. Upload the youtube video to one of the group blogs and write a few paragraphs about it. Specifically, write a paragraph and introduce the members of your group, what your product is, why you chose it, and your idea for the script. You can write other things and put up photos related to the product or CM too.

OK, let's get started - brainstorm your ideas for the product and the script! Do not forget to review the things we studied about advertising in our textbook and in the magazine presentations you made. Remember, for example, the ideas on pp. 15-16 for getting your audience's attention - telling a story, stating a fact, asking a question, giving a solution to a problem.
Here is the rough schedule. Since we still have work to finish up in our textbook, we may need to adjust it:
June 28 - # 1 and # 2
HW for July 4 - finish #2 and prepare what you need for #3, and bring the camera you will use.
July 4 - #4, #5, #6 - DO NOT FORGET ANYTHING - INCLUDING YOUR CAMERAS!
HW for July 11 - start #7
July 11 - #7, #8
HW for July 18 - #9, #10
July 18 (10:40-12:10) - 発表!and writing comments on all of the commercials

We must finish our work by July 18 so please work hard so we can stay on schedule!

Terra Chips

Here is the link to the homepage for Terra Chips. Have a look around the site and see what you can find. Spend 10 minutes having a look, make notes on what you find, then tell your partner.

越後製菓 mochi

Yumi found the new year mochi commercials that she mentioned in class last week and sent me the link to some of them. However, they are not quite like Lipovitan D. These CMs are a loose series - I think the main character stays the same for each one and the slogan is always the same. However, what happens in the CMs is very different. So, unlike what happens in the Lipovitan D CMs, where two young guys are in a physically challenging place and one gets into trouble, these stories are all different. Furthermore, they are advertising different products - senbei and o-mochi.  Have a look and you will see.

大正製薬 リポビタンD CM - Lipovitan D TV Commercials

Have you ever drunk Lipovitan D? Why did you drink it? What does it taste like? What effect did it have on you?

Here is a recent commercial for Lipovitan D, a long selling vitamin drink produced by Taisho Seiyaku that was first sold in Japan in 1962 (it started overseas sales beginning in 1963). In this blog, let us examine the advertising style of this product. First of all, note the format of the commercials- what happens in the drama? in the narration? how long are they?
#1

                                     #2

Now let's watch another one (#3).

The very same situation is in a 1993 commercial - compare the above recent one (#3) with the one from 20 years ago - anything the same? anything different?

Blog #2: TV Commercial

Find a TV commercial online that you like and introduce it in your blog. Make sure to show us the video of the CM. Tell us the what the product is and who makes it. Describe what happens in the CM and analyse the ad  - consider the images, the words, the music, the story, the characters, the colours, etc. Also, explain the selling point of the ad.
Write in clear, correct English and make sure to write in a paragraph and put a space after every comma and period Iike in this writing here).  Make sure to spell correctly!

Deadline for Blog #2: Thursday June 13 at 17:00.
Subject for blog should look like this:
Blog #2: xxxxname of productxxxxx (your name)

Here are some examples. The first one is a commercial for Nescafe Excella. It shows a young man and a young woman in the early stages of living in a shared house, which is a rather new idea in Japan, and maybe becoming popular. They are doing their morning routine. The message of the ad is that drinking Nescafe Excella together helps bring them together like a family. Though the people are not famous, they appeal to us as ordinary people who are living their daily lives and making Excella part of their lives. Though the impact is not strong, I think it reminds people that it is a good idea to drink Excella in the morning.

The second commercial is for Yebisu beer. There are maiko walking in slow motion on the street to their workplaces, which makes you think of Kyoto, tradition, high class, drinking alcohol (in the neighbourhood where they work) and big spending. These are fit images to advertise this beer, whose slogan is "chotto zeitaku na beer," which means that it is a high class or special beer.  The theme song will be familiar to anyone who is familiar with Yebisu beer. It is sung by a famous singer, Inoue Yosui, who has had a long career in Japan. Therefore he is known to a lot of people, especially people in their 50s, to whom this beer might be appealing. The way the images melt into each other and the dim lights give it a high class appeal too, like it is something refined and special. Though there is no information given in this ad, like the Excella ad, it creates a mood that is fit for the product. The ad is here.

Now, try to analyse this commercial for Suntory Premium Malts. Try your best!
